My work explores the boundaries of painting's potential through an exploration of the depiction of the human face. The intention is to create a painting from an image by exploring the elements of form, line, shape, value and colour, and also to intentionally subvert and distort the image in order to create a new work to which the viewer can respond.
The finished painting of the distorted human face may foster a variety of personal responses in the viewer as the trigger memories, emotions and questions about shifting identities.
For me, pushing the boundaries of painting is pivotal. The reference material, taken from media images, historical paintings, photographs, drawings and sketches - is subservient to what the paint can do.
